What we do

With an increasing risk of resistance to wormers, Worm Egg Counts are perfect as part of your targeted worming programme!

Why is carrying out a Faecal Worm Count Important?

Over the years there has been an increase in resistance to the active ingredients used in wormers. It is therefore important that we do not worm our horses when it is unnecessary to do so, which is better for our horses and helps prevent the development of resistance of wormers.

  • We would suggest that you carry out a worm count every 10 – 12 weeks for a healthy equine.
  • It is advisable to test new horses prior to turning them out on to pasture.

Equine Egg Worm Counts are available here.

Please Note

A Fecal egg count is a snap shot of a specific moment in time. The test detects eggs of mature parasites that live inside the body and pass their eggs to the outside by shedding them in to the dung. It is possible that at the time of testing the parasites are too young to produce eggs, if no eggs are being shed the infection cannot be detected.

There is also a possibility the eggs are In such small numbers at the time of testing they would be undetectable Thus showing a negative result. The above is extremely rare but we would like to point out the possibilities.

**SCOPS** post 📣🪱📣🐑

Are you a sheep farmer that has experienced recent rainfall following the previous very dry and warm weather? If so, the Sustainable Control of Parasites in Sheep (SCOPS) group is urging you to be extra vigilant in monitoring parasite burdens and lamb performance in your flock.

Nerys Wright, Technical Adviser for SCOPS, warns that the combination of recent rainfall and earlier dry conditions could create a perfect storm for increased worm challenges on pasture.
