How should I carry out my egg counts?
In order to get the most from faecal egg counts, it is essential to understand that they must be used correctly.
Due to parasite lifecycles, it is important to carry out several FECs during the grazing season. This provides a broader picture of burdens that may be present. When used effectively, FECs are an excellent tool and play an important role in slowing the risk of resistance on farm!
FECs should be carried out strategically! You will be pleased to hear that our Feclab ‘SMART plan’ does this for you.
Going forward, FEC s are what we should be basing our decision to worm (or not) on.

How many Kits are in my plan?
Each plan (I.e. 1 pack plan) has the following number of FEC kits within the SMART Plan:
Cattle SMART Plan: 7 X FEC Kits & 2 X Spare / Post Drench Kits.
Sheep SMART Plan: 7 x FEC, 1 X Spare Kit for Post Drench test & 1 X Fluke Kit (can also be used as a spare if Fluke kit not required).
Lamb SMART Plan: 6 x FEC Kits & 1 x Spare kit for post Drench test or Emergency.
Note* If you purchase a 2 Pack SMART Plan, you would receive double the amount of kits, suitable for the number of animals. You may then wish to use this between groups where needed.
Recommended Testing Guide for Mob / Pooled Sampling Numbers:
Stock: 1- 50 Head 10% = 1 Pack Plan*
Stock: 50 – 150 Head 10% = 1- 2 Pack Plan*
Stock 150 – 300 Head 10% = 2 – 3 Pack Plan*
*As a minimum, we recommended testing at least 10% or the herd or flock.
For High Risk Farms / Small Holdings or Groups, we would recommend testing a minimum of 20 – 30% of the herd, flock or group.
